Sunday Sessions: Amanacer / Daybreak
Amanacer.
It is a word which means daybreak in Spanish.
It is also the title of a song from Tish Hinojosa, a song of reflection, of thinking of a loved one at distance, of sending love and good thoughts across that distance.
Hinojosa sings it in Spanish. You will find the lyrics in Spanish with English translation, here.
Tish Hinojosa is Mexican American, first generation daughter of of parents whoo came from Mexico to San Antonio, Texas, where she grew up, and where she listened as much to the music of Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris that her brothers and sisters brought home as she did to music from Mexico coming across her parents’ radio in the kitchen.
When she began to write songs herself, Tish drew on all these elements, as well as her own experiences of family and landscape. Amanacer was part of her first album, Taos to Tennessee, a title drawn from her journey from living in northern New Mexico to Music City.
Hinojosa had recorded a number of albums, written songs of love, of heartbreak, of family, of the southwestern landscape. She’s also on occasion recorded traditional songs from Mexico, as well as original and traditional songs of the winter holidays, and songs for children.
I particularly like this somewhat older video of Tish Hinojosa singing Amanacer. She contunues to sing it in concert now and again; if you get the chance to see her perform live, take it.

Tish has on occasion joined up with Stephanie Urbina Jones and Patricia Vonne to perform and record as The Texicana Mamas. In this story at Perceptive Travel you can see a video from that collaboration as well as another one from Tish -- and music from several other musicians whose work you may want to explore also.
