The name of the song where you find these words is Love Is On Our Side.

Tish is a native Texan, born in San Antonio to a mother and father who had each come from Mexico, met and married there.

In her household growing up as the youngest of many brothers and sisters, Tish took in music from LInda Ronstadt (who would later record a song Tish wrote) and Emmylou Harris as well as music from Mexico coming across the radio in the kitchen.

In her own career in music, she sings and writes in both English and Spanish, at times, as in this song, all in one language, and at others offering lyrics in both languages in the same song.

As many of us look for sources of hope in light of recent events, the words Tish Hinojosa sings in Love Is On Our Side seem good companion.

Tish Hinojosa has recorded a number of albums, including an excellent winter holiday album called From Texas on a Christmas Night, a children’s album (which has been turned in to a book) called Cada Niño, and a collaborative project called Texicana Mamas.

Several of my favorites from her back catalogue of albums are Taos to Tennessee, Homeland, and Soñar Del Laberinto/Dreaming from the Labyrinth, which was released in both bi-lingual and all Spanish versions.

If you enjoy Tish’s music, you may also like the music of Joy Dunlop, an artist who often brings in songs or verses in another language to her work — though in her case it’s Scotish Gaelic.
